Your roof has black streaks on it. You’ve probably noticed them for a while now, maybe thought it was just dirt or something that would wash off with the next big rainstorm. It didn’t wash off. If anything, it’s gotten worse.
Those streaks aren’t dirt. They’re bacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma, and they’re feeding on your shingles right now. Not the most pleasant thing to hear, but it’s better to know what you’re dealing with.
This bacterium is everywhere in Monmouth County, NJ. The humidity here makes it thrive. It starts small – usually on the north side of your roof where there’s more shade and moisture. Then it spreads. Give it enough time and your whole roof turns dark.

Power Wash Your Roof To Remove Algae
What This Bacteria Does to Shingles
Asphalt shingles have limestone filler in them. Manufacturers use it because it’s cheap and adds weight to the shingles. The bacteria feed on that limestone. Slowly eats away at it.
The bacteria itself is actually blue-green, but it grows this dark outer coating to protect themselves from sunlight. That’s what makes your roof look black and dirty. And once it gets established on one roof, wind carries it to the neighbors. That’s why you’ll see entire streets where half the houses have the same problem.
The real damage happens over time. As the bacteria eat the limestone, your shingles weaken. The granules on top start coming loose. You’ll see them in your gutters after it rains. Those granules are important – they protect the asphalt underneath from getting cooked by the sun. Lose too many and your shingles age fast.
There’s also the heat issue. Dark surfaces absorb heat. A roof covered in black algae gets hotter than a clean one. Your attic gets hotter. Your AC works harder. Your electric bill goes up. Most people don’t connect those dots, but it’s a real thing.
Why Scrubbing Makes It Worse
When homeowners first spot these black streaks, the instinct is to get up there and scrub them off. Maybe grab a pressure washer from the hardware store. This usually ends badly.
Scrubbing tears off those protective granules we just talked about. They don’t grow back. You’ve just shortened your roof’s lifespan trying to clean it. Same thing with too much pressure from a washer – you’re blasting away the protection your shingles need.
The other problem is that scrubbing doesn’t actually kill the bacteria. You might lighten the stains temporarily. But the bacteria are still there, still feeding, and the black streaks come back within a few months. Sometimes they come back worse.
And then there’s the safety factor. Roofs are dangerous. They’re slippery when wet, and falls happen more often than you’d think. We’ve all heard the stories. Better to leave it to people who do this for a living and have the right equipment.
The Damage Keeps Adding Up
Left alone, roof algae does more than make your house look run-down. It actually shortens how long your roof lasts. A good asphalt shingle roof should give you 20-25 years, maybe more, depending on the brand. Algae can cut that down by years.
Once algae establishes itself, other stuff moves in. Moss starts growing. Moss is even worse because it gets under the edges of shingles and lifts them up. Water gets underneath during rain. That leads to rot in the wood deck under your shingles, which leads to leaks, which leads to problems inside your house.
A new roof costs anywhere from eight to twenty thousand dollars, depending on your house size. If you’re looking at replacing your roof five or ten years earlier than you should have to, that’s real money.
Roof Power Washing Done Right
USA Power Washing Plus cleans roofs throughout Monmouth County, NJ. We’ve been doing this long enough to know what works without damaging shingles.
The right approach kills the bacteria and removes the black buildup without stripping off the protective granules. When it’s done correctly, the difference is huge. Homeowners often tell us they forgot what color their roof actually was.
Timing matters. Catching this early, when you’re just starting to see streaks, prevents the worst damage. Once it’s spread across your entire roof, you’re dealing with more extensive work. The longer you wait, the more cleaning that’s needed.
What It Costs Not to Deal With It
Property value takes a hit when your roof looks bad. Real estate agents will tell you – roof condition is one of the first things potential buyers notice. Black streaks make your whole house look neglected, even if everything else is maintained.
Even if you’re not selling, there’s something to living in a house that looks taken care of. Your neighbors notice. You notice every time you pull into the driveway. It bothers you more than you think it would.
Professional cleaning costs a few hundred dollars. Replacing a roof years earlier than necessary costs thousands. The math isn’t complicated.
Get It Looked At
